TRENCH TRANSFORMATION

During my fashion studies, one project I worked on stands out: a modern interpretation of the timeless trench coat.

In a pattern making class, we were tasked with customising a basic coat pattern with at least three alterations. Initially, I chose to play with proportions and crafted an oversized collar with pointed lapels that also formed the silhouette of a mini cape at the back.

When I spied this thick khaki green fabric, I knew I had found the perfect canvas to give a nod to the classic trench coat with a modern feel. Incorporating utilitarian patch pockets and lengthening the original hemline were my other customizations that complemented this vision.

The pièce de résistance? The gold crest military buttons I had kept for years, waiting for the perfect project. They became the finishing touch that brought the whole look together.

This project taught me the value of creativity within constraints and showed me that sometimes, great designs can emerge as a result of limitations.
